How much exercise should I be taking?

You should try to walk 10,000 steps a day.

Most of us walk between 3,000 & 4,000 steps a day, so reaching 10,000 isn't as daunting as it sounds.

The currently recommended level of exercise for ADULTS is 150 minutes of "moderately intensive aerobic" activity per week. Moderately intensive aerobic activity means you're working hard enough to raise your heart rate and break a sweat. One way to tell if you're working at a moderate intensity is if you can still talk, but you can't sing the words to a song. And the good news is that all 10+ minute bursts of activity count towards your 150 minutes.

Other examples of activities that require moderate effort for most people include:

  • water aerobics
  • riding a bike on level ground or with few hills
  • doubles tennis
  • pushing a lawn mower
  • hiking
  • skateboarding
  • rollerblading
  • volleyball
  • basketball
So, as you can see, walking is by far the simplest way of getting and staying healthy.
